Canadian Climate Change Websites

These websites were all developed in Canada and feature Canadian information.
To help you quickly find the sites you need, the they are roughly sorted into five categories:

  • Teacher Sites – Including Lesson Plans/Projects/ Backgrounders
  • Research Sites – Primarily useful for student research
  • Action Sites – Primarily promoting a project or action to slow climate change
  • Kids’ Clubs – Fun sites, with jokes, animations, interaction tools
  • Calculators – Sites where students input data to get immediate results

Keep in mind that many of these sites fall into more than one category. Many of the teacher sites and kids’ club sites, for instance, also contain excellent background information on climate change. Canadian maps of all kinds, but particularly ones about climate change trends. Best of all, you can click to get to your region!

Don’t Miss:

  • Climate Change – Try clicking on Climate Change, then Climate Warming, then Global Summer Temperatures 2050. When you get the map, click on your region, and keep clicking until you get just where you want. It’s amazing what you can find on this site!

Students 6 –13 years old submit artwork. Winners are chosen from each province and territory. The site includes supporting materials that are both fun and factual.

Don’t Miss:

  • Club House – Animated entertaining cartoons on saving energy –for younger kids
  • For Teachers – This section includes information on the Energy and Environment Calendar, a nation wide art contest on energy conservation for students 6–13 years old, good Educational Links, and a backgrounder on energy efficiency and climate change.

This site supports a series of seven posters depicting the regional impacts of climate change in Canada (FREE ordering info on this site). Lots of region-specific information on Nunavut,Yukon & NWT. An excellent, informative site.

Don’t Miss:

  • Nunavut/Western Arctic – Regional-specific information – Click on regional names under the Canadian map to bring up lots of information about climate change specific to Nunavut and Western Arctic (Yukon and NWT).
  • Health & Safety, Communities, Land Resources, Water Resources, Coastal Regions – All these topics, listed down the side, contain links to specifically northern information.
  • Curriculum Tools
    Contain background information for Nunavut and Western Arctic, and lesson plans for teaching the posters.
  • View and Order Posters – Click on the poster you want to order, and the ordering information will appear. These posters are free. Note: The Nunavut poster is available in Inuktitut (refer to order # M27-01-1787N).

A “shopping list” of environmental programs for elementary and secondary students, complete with curriculum links and back-up materials. Choose your projects, and Green Street will send you the materials you need, and – depending on the project – back-up funding.

Don’t Miss:

  • Elementary and Secondary School Links – Click on one of these, then click on your region, and you’ll get a list of approved environmental programs. Some of these are websites already listed here; some are more print-based. Choose the one that suits you. The advantage of registering through Green Street is that print and audio materials will be provided free, and Green Street will often provide extra funding to support your project (the amount is indicated in the information on each project).

The Plantwatch site engages students in observing, recording and reporting the flowering times of flowers in their region. This data, collected and reported on the website, provides useful information on climate change in Canada.

Don’t Miss:

  • Plantwatch– Click on all the sections: Why Monitor Plants, How to Plantwatch, Frequently Asked Questions, etc. This will give you the information you need to decide whether this program would be valuable for your class.
  • Educator Materials – Has excellent lesson plans involving community research (interviewing parents and grandparents about their seasonal knowledge), tagging and observing plants, and more.

  • Nature Challenge – David Suzuki's Nature Challenge is a thought-provoking challenge to take personal action to slow climate change. Click on any of the points, and find an explanation on why this action is important. A good way to involve your students in discussion and action.
