4 Ways To Make The Most Of A Minimalist Living Space

Minimalist living does not mean a person has to give up a stylish way of life; in fact it’s just the opposite. Minimalism just means that a person or family is making the most out of less; less furniture, less clutter and in most cases much less stress. It takes a bit of time and imagination and mountains of restraint, especially if you’re the type of person that enjoys picking up knick-knacks from every outing. If you are someone who wants to embrace the minimalist lifestyle, here are a few tips to help you do just that.

  1. Clear the clutter – When you are living in a limited amount of space every item in the room should have a purpose. If you are a collector of knick-knacks display only one collection at a time, rotating them out with the change of seasons or a change of mood. A small space will seem much larger if not every surface is covered with an object.
  2. Multi-use furniture – There are manufactures that specialize in making pieces of furniture that can serve more than one function. For example, a table which is anchored to the wall on one side can be folded up and made into an instant piece of wall art. Murphy beds are highly customizable and can be folded away into a bookcase when not in use. Chairs can be converted into a small table, and nesting tables are great for use as end tables, a coffee table or even a desk.
  3. Use smaller appliances – Manufactures are recognizing the need for appliances that can work for individuals or two person families. We now have dishwashers that can fit in a drawer, refrigerators that can fit under a counter and clothes washers and dryers that are contained in one unit (the washing cycle ends and the machine will then start the drying process).
  4. Become a minimalist – If the floor is clear of rugs the space will seem much larger because the eye will move continually instead of being “captured” as it falls upon a rug. Adopt the “a place for everything, and everything in its place” motto to keep items from taking up valuable space. One or two pieces of nice art on the walls are all that is needed in a small area to keep it feeling spacious, yet still stylish. Using colors in the same family will also help to keep the eye moving, and lighter wall colors will make the room appear as if sunshine is flowing through, even on a cloudy day.

Replacing kitchen cabinets door with see through glass is a way to make the kitchen feel larger, and using reflective surfaces such as a glass coffee table or strategically placed mirrors will do so as well. Living in a small space just takes a bit of imagination and research to make it feel like a stylish home.
